    About the Book

    Edit

Tragically, chronic instability and conflict have plagued Afghanistan's recent past. The result is now an economy and infrastructure decimated and the wholesale displacement of its peoples.

The events of 2001 - "the year that changed the world" - were preceded by decades of war, the longest drought on record and six years of Taliban rule. Millions of Afghans had been forced from their homes to seek safety and food. The country was in crisis.

Grant Somers was in Afghanistan for 6 months prior to '9/11', on mission with Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders). He was one of the last foreigners to work in the country whilst under the control of the extremist Taliban regime. His stunning images captured during this period are all the more compelling as photography was illegal.
