About the Book
Exaggerated facial expressions became thoughts, hand gestures became voices, costumes established an atmosphere and lines and shapes defined the environments.
Then as now, the compositions were completely imaginary. There were few preliminary sketches and each painting evolved in a process of trial and error, a meandering route that often involved many iterations. These revisions occurred over the course of weeks, months, years, even decades and today, the paintings that exist that were not sold or given away, bare little or no resemblance to their 1980 selves.
But in this book, they all exist, and with a few digital touches, they have been a given a second act.
The paintings are testaments to another time and place, and judging from what I see, life for them back then wasn’t so bad.
As an artist for over forty odd years, my biggest gig so far has been as the official White House Portraitist. During the past two years, I have had the privilege of painting our DearLeader over a couple dozen times looking his authoritarian best in all kinds of remarkable settings. And now, after much anticipation, I have finally assembled those paintings into a 48 page full-color book that includes personal commentaries, as well. It has been truly an inspiration to be so close and present with the man with the golden touch, who in every sense of the phrase, is Making America Great Again.
