One of the most dramatic aspects of Corregidor is that it completed a full cycle in which the two belligerents reversed the roles of defense and assault. Each garrisoned the fortress against overwhelming odds, and each attacked it with overpowering forces. These events offer an interesting study in contrasts, from which the tremendous superiority of American tactics, methods, and characteristics is clearly demonstrated.
In 1945, when America returned as an attacking force, the positions were amazingly reversed. The island was taken in less than two weeks. The depths of defeat were vindicated, at last, by an equally spectacular victory.
Perhaps it is best that the realities of Corregidor might merge into a legend of supreme self-sacrifice and invincible accomplishment.
Through the Corregidor Historic Society and, more recently the 503d PRCT Heritage Regiment., Paul presents thirteen publications, all connected in some way with Corregidor and the US Armed Forces in the SWPA during WWII. He started developing the Corregidor.Org website about the 1941-42 siege and the 1945 retaking of Corregidor as a penance for being an insolvency lawyer. Now retired, he has produced ten websites, more than a dozen Military History books, and has co-produced, with Peter Parsons, the documentary of the 1945 retaking of Corregidor - "CORREGIDOR - THE ROAD BACK. He married Rosie in 1980, has three adult children, and hates cats. He lives between two shores, Corregidor and Brisbane, Australia.
