Twenty-something Talora Katz is waitressing for a political fundraiser hosted by a wealthy fat cat at the swanky St. Gabriel Hotel for presidential candidate Governor Avanti Washington when all of a sudden she finds herself in the crosshairs of a red-eyed, tattoo-faced man, who looks as if he has no earthly business being at the event. The man lurking through the crowd of bigwigs is not a man. Yet, he's a vampire; in fact, he happens to be a member of the notorious Vampos, one of the deadliest gangs east of the Mississippi. For reasons she can neither explain nor comprehend, Talora has a price on her head.

After barely escaping with her life from the deadly gang, Talora, who's been on the run all night, has no other choice than to take advantage of first daylight by fleeing Manhattan in search of shelter in a small town in Missouri. It is there in Soy, Missouri, where Talora reconnects with her aunt, Dina, who's remained absent after a family fallout many years ago. Her Aunt Dina ends up providing Talora with a new job, not only to take Talora's mind off New York City, but also to keep her busy.

As Talora adjusts to her new yet much "slower" lifestyle, she tries to makes sense as to why the Vampos want her dead; however, the reason may be too uncomfortable for Talora to wear.
