About the Book
One in eight couples in the United States struggle with infertility. This overwhelming battle can leave individuals and couples feeling completely isolated and in desperate need of support.
Photographer and artist Monica Brodovsky first encountered this when one of her closest friends was diagnosed with severe endometriosis. In an effort to support others who are struggling too, and to showcase the honest, raw hardships that those in this community must endure, she asked Monica to document her and her husband’s journey through in vitro fertilization. Documenting her friend’s journey enlightened Monica to the quiet battle that is infertility, and to the loss, misunderstanding, shame, disappointment, and crippling sadness that often accompanies it.
Inspired by her friend’s act of bravery and selflessness and driven to make a change, Monica set out on her own journey in search of others who were willing to share their infertility stories. Comprising 25 different interviews, The One in Eight: Faces of Infertility brings to the forefront an unprecedented collection of relatable and heart wrenching stories from diverse individuals and couples. They have all fearlessly put their stories out into the world to help educate, advocate, and reflect upon this very important topic that is too often misunderstood and stigmatized.
Joined by Cristina DiBartolomeo, a licensed professional counselor, infertility warrior, and advocate, each unique story is accompanied by a therapeutic reflection that highlights a theme that frequently occurs along the infertility journey. Readers will have the opportunity to answer questions and process their own feelings and emotions based on each reflection and how it connects to their own story.
All of the courageous souls that fill these pages have poured their hearts out to help inspire, guide, and support others. It’s time to normalize the conversation around infertility.
A portion of proceeds will be donated to the Baby Quest Foundation.
