The White Pass and Yukon Railroad is but 111 miles long, built out of rock at close to maximum allowable 4 per cent grade. It was finished in 1900 to support the Yukon "Gold Rush". The railroad is dangerous year-round with hazards like snow and rock slides and washouts from flooding. It was never operated in winter until the US Army did in 1943 and 1944 due to urgent wartime logistical demands. There are many stunning photos of the hazards and dangerous operating conditions during winter operations on the White Pass and Yukon RR that have never been shown before. Due to the uniqueness of Frank's experiences and how he artfully presents his most creative thoughts in writing, this book has proven to be exceptional reading, even for those not interested in railroad subjects.

Frank Pelletier, the principal in this cultural American history presentation was my uncle. I am a retired logistics executive trained to research and write history in college. I have taught U.S. Railroad History at the college level and have written and presented U.S. railroad and Chicago area railroad history at various forums including library programs and historical societies. My father was a Chicago & Northwestern railroad engineer so I have been around the railroad milieu all my life. Whats' more, I like railroads and railroading! My family left me their saved World War II collections of letters, photos, maps, newspaper articles, poems and drawings from which this book was constructed. These original source assets would be lost and forgotten if I did not make the effort to write this book. There is also the potential that other families whose forebears served in the 713th and 770th Railway Operating Battalions may find their ancestors on these pages in lists or photos.
