About the Book
The exhibition takes its inspiration from the Hermann Hesse quotation, “Within you there is a stillness and sanctuary to which you can retreat at any time and be yourself.” Each photographer discovers a personal resonance in their surroundings. The streets provide an endless backdrop for drama, both light and dark, played out in empty silence. Open fields and vast stretches of coastline bring awareness to the human plight and its relation to nature’s ever-changing landscapes. Windows frame thoughts, a moment, a longing, a child’s wonder. It is this sense of searching that allows for opportunities and inspiration.
Curated by Amit Sethi, Constance Keller and Cassandra Metz under the mentorship of artists and instructors of Vantage Points: Heidi Norton, Kate Steciw, and Antonio Bever.
The Topica Collective was formed by a group of new photographers in the wake of the pandemic - originally meeting at the International Center for Photography in New York in 2019 and then continuing online since March, 2020. Over the course of almost two years and under the mentorship of the art educators at Vantage Points, the Topica Collective artists have ambitiously worked to create art that reveals the truths, tragedy, and isolation of the pandemic.
