      About the Book

      Edit

Paperback Edition: Genetics of Racing is one of the few books which shows in practical terms how animal breeders can produce generations of animals which excel in the traits for which they are breeding. The book specifically focuses on the genetics of pigeon racing, but it is applicable to any species and for any set of traits. It is based on the science of genetics and is presented within a framework of clear concepts backed up with numerous examples that come from the author’s sixty years of animal breeding experience with rabbits, sheep, swine and racing pigeons.

      The book covers:

How to use Contemporary Group Testing to normalize environmental influences.

Why and how to do Progeny Testing.

How and when to use inbreeding, linebreedng, outcrossing and cross breeding.

How to manage the Gene Pool.

When and how to do DNA testing for performance alleles.

A nine step road map that shows the reader how to implement the concepts of the book for their own breeding program.

      • Dave Shewmaker has been an avid animal breeder for over sixty years. He first became interested in genetics at the age of nine when he began breeding rabbits. He was introduced to racing pigeons at the age of fourteen, but only kept them for a brief time. He continued breeding rabbits for the next forty eight years, successfully developing a number of highly inbred lines. • After graduating from the University of California with a Bachelor of Science degree in Genetics, he moved to Ohio where he established a commercial swine seed stock operation. • In the early eighties he became Director of Porcine Products for Genetic Engineering Inc. It was during this period that he became interested in the genetics of racing animals. Not having the resources to breed Thoroughbred horses, he returned to racing pigeons. • He established his first flock of racing pigeons in 1985. Today he operates Shewmaker Genetics in California. He maintains over a dozen inbred lines and does
