I have a single credential to commend the writing of this book: I have often asked, as have many others, the question “Why?” And I ask this in the light of what I know to be the calling of each one of us. It is a calling to saintliness, a calling we too often fail to hear, or fail to heed when we do hear it. Consider the works in this collection simply the words of someone who thinks about right and wrong, perhaps too often for his own good. I am simply one who wants to understand. I am merely one who tries, and who often fails, just like everybody else.
