      About the Book

      Edit

Peasant village life in Suchowola in 19th-century Poland was conditioned by close ties between families and neighbors. For many years, their movements were restricted under the system of Russian serfdom leading to marriages between nearby neighbors soon blurring family distinctions.

Large families with high mortality rates, especially for young mothers and their babies, necessitated finding a new spouse to look after and provide for their children. Over time, multi-generational families were living under the same roof, and they all labored for the same goal: survival.

This book presents the histories of two families, Abramowicz and Milewski, gleaned from where they were in 1864 and who over time became blended and maybe even dangerously intertwined genetically. As the story unfolds, the methodology of genealogical research and the challenges of using early documents are explained and illustrated.
