About the Book
Time is money and that is why the truck driver, or possibly the driver's boss, wants to get from A to B as quickly as possible. For years, drivers could drive for hours on end without rules regarding working hours. Accidents caused by falling asleep were therefore common. Nowadays, drivers have to adhere to a strictly controlled driving time legislation set by the EU.
I find the contradiction between standing still and waiting and the rapid movement of daily work fascinating. Drivers have to find a place along motorways to rest and sleep, because the large trucks cannot be parked everywhere, the drivers usually stand together in the parking spaces. This creates small temporary villages on weekends.
The drivers talk to each other, hang around and sleep in the truck. They may cook their own food and watch a movie or read a book.
The tranquility that emanates from this own world is captured in this photo document by photographer Pieter Brantjes.
