On June 24, 2022, the United States Supreme Court released its decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, overturning the constitutional right to abortion. To date, over 24 states have made abortion illegal or incredibly difficult to obtain. South Carolina is currently trying to propose the death Penalty for women who have an abortion. As an artistic protest, the Plan B Art Project has gathered over 70 artists to make “Amphora inspired” wearable art-forms and objects to bring attention to the forcible restrictions put on a person’s ability to make decisions for their own bodies.
Art has always been a symbolic tool to bring light to societal injustices and the Plan B. project is a subtle nod to our past and most disturbingly the future of a woman’s ability to seek a safe method of ending her pregnancy. Immediately before Roe v. Wade, more than 200 women died per year due to at home abortion methods. Is this the current path that we are on? Regrettably a past in which a woman did not have dominion over her own being seems to be our new normal.
