About the Book
This unique book, although concise, accurately captures the history of one of the famed Foreign Legion-mounted companies from the golden age of the Legion. The fascinating history of the mounted companies in Algeria and Morocco is seldom mentioned due to a substantial lack of historical materials. This work captures the initial fleeting creation of La Montée during the Mexican campaign in the 1860s, through to their permanent formation in Algeria in 1881. It follows the organisational structure of the CMA amid the solitary confines of the Sud Oranais and observes the company as it battles with Arabs and Berbers from Algeria's rocky desert floor to vast, breathless stretches of Morocco's High Atlas Mountains. Additionally, the book celebrates the harsh lives of the mounted legionnaires through 53 never-before-seen photographs.
