    About the Book

    Edit

"Who We Are" brings together figural and abstract works by modern and contemporary African American artists that explore music and religion, personal and cultural history, beauty rituals and perceptions of the body. While each work represents the artist's individual response to these aspects of personal identity, the universality of these ideas permits viewers of any cultural background to relate the works to their own life experiences.

Curated by Tyler School of Art/Temple University Art History graduate students Heather L. Castro, Natalie E. Jackson, and Rachel F. Kirchgasler as part of Dr. Susanna W. Gold's fall 2009 course, "Race and Gender in American Art.
