About the Book
Born on January 29, 1925, in the small shtetl of Vișeu de Sus, Romania, Louis Muller grew up in a traditional Jewish family shaped by faith, modest means, and close community ties. When World War II erupted, his young life was torn apart. Deported to a brutal Hungarian labor camp under the Arrow Cross regime, Louis endured forced labor repairing bombed rail lines and narrowly escaped as the war shifted around him. His mother and grandmother were murdered in Auschwitz; his brother survived by fleeing east.
After escaping both Nazi and Soviet captivity, Louis spent three years in a Displaced Persons Camp before rebuilding his life in Montreal, and later Cleveland.
Though he rarely spoke about his wartime suffering, Louis’s life speaks volumes—about endurance, faith, and gratitude. Surrounded by children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, he finds meaning in family, observance, and the simple joy of living. His message is clear: remember the past, cherish your heritage, and ensure that such darkness never returns.
