    About the Book

    Edit

A lifetime of painting. A complete visual language. One definitive volume.

Across decades of sustained work, Kai Kingsley III has built something increasingly rare in contemporary painting: a visual language entirely his own. His paintings are not driven by fashion, trend, quotation, or easy reference. They unfold from a disciplined inner logic — painting by painting, mark by mark, decision by decision.

This volume gathers Kingsley’s work into a single visual account, revealing the depth, rigor, and continuity of a career devoted to serious artistic inquiry. The figure, the field, and the mark become elements of a private grammar. What may first appear as repetition soon reveals itself as refinement — a structure of variations, tensions, and visual arguments carried across time.

Kingsley’s paintings reward close looking. Their power is not spectacle, but accumulation. Composure, restraint, theatricality, and emotional weather move through the work, giving abstraction a human charge without reducing it to illustration.

For collectors, artists, curators, and serious viewers, this book offers the first full encounter with a body of work built slowly, rigorously, and on its own terms.

To enter this volume is to enter a language still in motion — one that deepens with return, and makes a serious claim for what painting can still carry.

    Kai Kingsley III
    Palm Springs

Kai Kingsley III is an American painter whose practice spans more than five decades. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he has developed a singular visual language grounded in mark-making, reduction, and repetition, moving fluidly between abstraction and figuration while remaining independent of prevailing trends. He lives and works in Palm Springs, California. Kingsley studied at Fairleigh Dickinson University, served in the United States Army, and received his B.A. from the University of Maryland in 1974. He continued postgraduate study at Towson State University, St. Thomas University Seminary in Denver, and the Naropa Institute in Boulder, where his engagement with psychology, philosophy, and contemplative thought further informed the intellectual foundation of his work. Over the course of his career, Kingsley has exhibited in the United States, Europe, and Asia, with notable presentations in Santa Fe, Honolulu, Chicago, Denver, Bangkok, Hua Hin, Munich, Bern, and Palm Springs.
