Born in Budapest in 1936, Judith Beckman Lefkovitz Hersh spent her earliest years in a loving family, unaware that she was Jewish—or that her world was about to change forever. When Nazi Germany occupied Hungary in 1944, eight-year-old Judy was thrust into a nightmare of forced relocations, hunger, fear, and life inside the Budapest Ghetto. Through extraordinary acts of courage, narrow escapes, and the kindness of strangers, she survived one of history's darkest chapters while losing her beloved father to the Holocaust.

After the war, Judy's journey continued through displaced persons camps in Germany before she immigrated to America to begin rebuilding her life. Despite interrupted schooling, family hardships, and the lasting effects of trauma, she created a life filled with love, friendship, faith, and family. Together with her husband, fellow Holocaust survivor Ted Hersh, she raised four children and became the matriarch of a growing family.
