About the Book
Burke Vancil grew up on the I.B. Vancil farm (above) with sisters Ollie, Effie and Ida who became his heirs.
Burke and his wife Mit traveled widely. Burke’s photographic record of their life and travels dates from the turn of the century with family photos from at least as early as 1896 through at least 1917. The glass slides collection includes over 100 slides taken in San Francisco during the days following the 1906 earthquake.
Ollie's granddaughter Katie Gorham is now the steward of Uncle Burke's glass slides. Grandson Peter Midnight scanned the slides so that the images could be preserved and shared. Granddaughter kristen rinaker prepared this compilation showing all the slides.
Our thanks for background information to:
Effie's family, for letters from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake provided by Bob Homer; and Ida's family, for a link to historical data on the Internet provided by Mike Berbaum.
