About the Book
THE BOOK
Roger Tory Peterson, the distinguished ornithologist and editor of the indispensable Peterson’s Field Guides to many of the natural sciences, came in his later years to a time of stopped energies that threatened an end to his paintings of birds. His wife, Virginia, led by intuition, created a garden designed to attract butterflies, which had been Dr. Peterson’s first interest in his early years as a scientist. The butterflies came; heaviness lifted; Dr. Peterson took up his brush again … and Virginia Peterson became an advocate for butterfly gardens. Her gift of the Butterfly Garden at Holy Cross Abbey, made in memory of Dr. Peterson's longtime friend and physician Doctor David Lauler, is a living symbol of these circling friendships.

THE AUTHORS
Beverly Pearce and Brother Benedict Simmonds met in a Shenandoah Valley bookstore, Satisfied Mind. The name is a fitting emblem of their many publication collaborations for Holy Cross Abbey, a Cistercian (Trappist) monastery on the banks of the river sixty miles west of Washington. To Beverly’s skills in design and art as photographer Benedict adds, from his years before entering the monastery in 1983, a life with books – in the Special Collections of the New York Public Library, as Librarian of the Grolier Club, and Director of the Eakins Press Foundation.
