About the Book
Alexandra Gibson is drawn to all things nocturnal. In stark black & white and vibrant color, she explores the boundaries of gender, sex, and eroticism. With a background in both art photography and journalism, her images carry a strong sense of personal and editorial narrative with an eye for the surreal. Gibson shies away from studio photography, preferring to catch her subjects in their "natural environment" - performers backstage, club-kids in nightclubs, lovers in their beds. For her recent "Erotica" series, Gibson added "performance-art photography" to her repertoire. Gibson builds a photography stage at a gallery, party, or bar, and invites models and members of the audience to participate in live photo shoots. Throughout the night, boundaries shift and dissolve leaving the illusion that perhaps the only thing constant is the shutter in the dark.
