    About the Book

    Edit

This unique exhibition, "Industrialism in the 21st Century", features works from ten of America's leading urban realists: Don Eddy, Jan Anders Nelson, Allan Gorman, Chris Klein, Roland Kulla, Sheryl Luxenburg, Stephen Magsig, James Ritchie, Joseph Santos, and Mark Cervenka. In the early part of the Twentieth Century, some American artists found voice for their work in a fresh, new pictorial language celebrating power and the massive growth of industrialism. This movement is often referred to as Industrialism or Precisionism. This new exhibit presents some of the best of today's practitioners carrying on the tradition of this aesthetic with examples from one of America's great Realists, Don Eddy, and nine other superbly talented artists from across the US, Canada and Great Britain. The exhibit was developed by co-curators and modern realists; Jan Anders Nelson from Gig Harbor, WA and Allan Gorman who is from West Orange, NJ.

    Jan Nelson
    Gig Harbor, Washington, USA

Jan Anders Nelson examines thoughts and realities of the past, reflecting on them from a present viewpoint drawing on the wisdom and experience brought by time. His contemplative oil paintings and dramatic drawings and photographs portray yesteryear’s industrial endeavors upon which nature and the passage of time have left their visible mark. The earth tones and granular textures of eroded metals contrast sharply against unexpected areas of fresh color, suggesting human efforts to counteract the effects of time, nature, and neglect. While his subjects refer to photographs he’s taken over the years, Nelson’s brushwork and hand are evident in his painting and drawings. Earning a Master of Arts from the University of Wisconsin in 1977, Jan also spent time living in New York City attending New York University, working on a series of drawings under the mentorship of fellow artist and friend Don Eddy. Jan’s work has been exhibited internationally.
