Robert Day was born in 1957 and grew up around railways. He started taking photography seriously in 1970 and over the years has turned his attention to all forms of transport as well as architecture and the trade union movement.

He has received commendations for his photography, and in 2008 was the first winner of the international Labour Photographer of the Year award.
