About

Adu Gindy (b. 1941) creates dramatic and fanciful images of animals, bugs, gods and people, all living in one big universe. Her lively and colorful canvases and works on paper are in museum collections throughout the Upper Midwest region of the United States, and in Sweden and Cuba.

Born in 1941 in Pärnu, Estonia, Adu spent a tumultuous youth in post-war relocation camps in Germany before emigrating with her mother to the United States in 1950. She earned her B.A. from Vassar College and her M.A.T. from Columbia Teachers College, prior to earning an M.F.A. from the University of Minnesota in 1989.

Gindy taught in the Art & Design Department at the University of Minnesota, Duluth for 25 years. She now lives in Minneapolis and Hayward, Wisconsin with her husband, Scott Bertas, and paints from her studio in The California Building in the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District.
