    About the Ebook

Since the early 1930s, Spillers Mill stood proudly on the banks of the River Tyne as Newcastle’s home of flour production.

At its peak, the mill used to provide flour for one in every ten loaves of bread made in the United Kingdom.

For eight years photographer Jack Lowe cycled by the iconic building he affectionately named The White Cliffs of Byker, commuting to his studio in Hoults Yard. Early in 2011, the sad announcement came that Spillers Mill was to be demolished.

This book documents the progress of the demolition, as photographed by Jack on his cycle ride to work.

    Jack Lowe
    Newcastle upon Tyne, England

At the age of nine, my grandmother gave me an old Kodak Instamatic. I feel like I’ve carried a camera ever since. After a few years in London working as a photographic assistant, I launched headlong into my own career as a photographer. However, life takes its twists and turns and, for the last twelve years, I've dedicated much of my working life to printing and retouching for other photographers. 2012 seemed the right time to embrace my roots once again by building www.mrjacklowe.com, a forum for my own photography. Here, I write about my work both old and new, as well as discussing other matters of interest. I also sell my prints directly from the site. If you have a moment, do pay it a visit. Thank you for your interest and do look out for future publications...
