About the Book
In this book the author explores a new concept, the professional mystique, and explains how it developed and how it can be used and misused. The author's career as operational auditor and evaluator spanned some 30 years, during which he at times met resistance to his fact-finding and reporting. This led him to think through some of the issues and resistance to providing information needed to complete his analyses and reports. He reflected on these common patterns and behaviors, and composed a series of articles for some professional journals he contributed to and edited beginning in 1990. After completing about ten years of international consulting work spanning Europe and Asia promoting good governance and transparency - he also encountered similar patterns of resistance to fact finding and reporting across national and cultural divides. He saw similar patterns in other cultures and periods of history. Thus, the need for this book, to attempt to explain these patterns and reactions. This is only his view and appraisal. Others with similar experiences, will likely come to different conclusions. The author hopes that his experience and conclusions, promote discussion and will add some additional value and perspective to what has already been written.
