About the Book
Identity is a powerful currency, creating bonds of belonging or sending unmistakable signs of exclusion. In the realm of human experience, a fundamental truth prevails: Human potential flourishes when individuals feel a sense of belonging. The need to see ourselves portrayed spans many centuries. The aim of this exhibition is to reveal how the power of the portrait lies in its enduring ability to show us how we see ourselves, and how we would like to be seen.
Clara Nartey uses traditional quilting techniques and brightly colored and patterned fabrics of her own design to create portraits that celebrate her African heritage. They are electric, energetic and thoughtful. Threads act as a drawn line; the layers of cloth as paint and glazes. By using scale and subtle detail to elevate her subjects, it forces the viewer to look at these individuals directly, creating a sense of proximity, accessibility and individuality.
