      About the Book

      Edit

The handmade edition of “Tsipore Shamayim” or “Birds of the Sky” is limited to ten books. The hand-colored woodcut prints in the book are reproductions of a group of small paintings included in the series “Legends of Tanakh” by Dan RiiS Grife. The illustrations chronicle the events of the day that the future King of Israel faced the terrible giant Goliath. The images follow these events as seen through David’s eyes Text from the Book of Samuel printed in both Hebrew and English appear on the opposing pages. Midrash and folktales surrounding the stories are interspersed with the scriptural text. Only the finest materials are used in production of the original edition. The woodblocks and text are printed on acid-free rag paper; archival inks are used in the coloring and printing. Fine calf leather over archival binders board covers the book. Each book is nested in a hand carved, cotton velvet lined cedar presentation box. Eastern right-to- left orientation of this reproduction is faithful to the original. Unlike the original, the final pages of this book contain photos of paintings paired with the corresponding woodblock.

Growing up in New Mexico I always knew I would spend my life making art. After receiving a BFA from the University of New Mexico, I went to work in theatre as a sceneographer and set designer. I eventually started painting and printmaking full time. My work has been exhibited internationally. Ideas are always executed in series. Each new body incorporates elements and techniques from previous efforts. My current compilation has taken several years of intensive study and labor to complete. The Tanakh Series draws on the varied cultures of my native state. Echoes of Spanish colonial iconographic image-making and a rich southwestern palate mingle with traditional copper-working techniques to create a depth of field that portrays the vast landscape and noble character of my subjects. My bookbinding work has been collected by lovers of quality books all over the nation. My hand printed and bound limited edition of Agadot Ha Tanakh (Legends of the Bible) and my book “Birds of the Sky” are
