About the Book
Book description: Having been invited to attend The Royal College of Art, London, 2000-02, Jason Steel was left directionless when garments from his graduate collection, Homage to Hockney, started to suggest complex outcomes. It was then that the dream of being a menswear designer evaporated overnight leaving him with a confusing array of work that was neither fashion, costume nor contemporary art- & as we all know, it's just what an employer wants to hear. From these ashes, slowly & over a period of a decade, Steel's practice stared to emerge. All the odd references started to make sense when seen together- suddenly, squatting on the pavement to make a cross from fag ends didn't seem quite so bizarre. This book is a compendium of works that explore a complex & ever unfolding internal language where bears are embroidered with precious gems & MK-Ultra mind control makes a regular appearance- all filtered through a Yorkshire voice.
