    About the Book

    Edit

The location, design and functions of water-powered mills in Lancaster County, PA -- and elsewhere -- established the physical, economic and social foundations of communities and regions in the most profound and fundamental ways. Compass Mill in Warwick Township, Lancaster County was one such manufacturing facility. Built in 1776 by pioneering members of the Moravian Community of Lititz, PA, this massive stone mill allowed the community to process lumber for building their town, and for farmers to have their grains milled for sale and for their own families. This mill building is one of five others still in existence along a seven-mile stretch of Lititz Run, one of the most pristine streams in the entire Mid-Atlantic Region of the U.S. None of these historic mills still functions as a small manufacturing facility, but all six are potential candidates for re-investment and new futures -- collectively and individually -- grounded in their history and in the natural setting that helped to create and define them.
