About the Book
At Downtown Montessori Academy we educate the whole child. The core areas of learning are: reading, math, writing, art, music and social studies. However, the fabric that weaves these subjects together is the foundation of Social-Emotional intelligence. We strive to support children in their journey toward understanding and communicating their emotions in a safe environment; while simultaneously guiding them to recognize and respect the emotions of others in their community. Feelings are not good or bad; they are expressions of what it means to be human.
Lower-Elementary students at Downtown Montessori in the Fall of 2019 worked to write a descriptive poem about an emotion of their choice engaging the 5 senses which they then illustrated in Art Class. This art project engages deeply in Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), which is about understanding one’s self and others.
