About the Book
Frank E. Cummings III is perhaps best known as a sculptural wood turner. His vessels are formed on the lathe, then chiseled, carved and sanded. He incorporates a variety of gems, precious metals and other materials into his works.
Cummings' artistic nature is honed by his reverence of the creative process and his desire for functional unity. His creative vision and willingness to explore make him difficult to categorize. From his body ornaments, clock and furniture to his Jeweled Fantasy wood vessel collection, Odes and mirrored Vanity series, Cummings is known for his use of natural materials and his extraordinary workmanship.
Cummings retired in 2000 after thirty years as a professor and administrator at California State University, Long Beach and California State University, Fullerton. He has served as a consultant to the NEA and the State Department on Arts in America. His work has been exhibited and collected worldwide and is in the collections of the Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian Institution and the White House Collection of American Craft.
