This is a book about basic urban design concepts. Increasingly, ordinary citizens are asked to weigh the merits of proposed architectural projects in their downtowns. But as laymen they often lack an understanding of the fundamental principles by which such projects should be evaluated. This book helps bring them up to speed. It may also be useful as an introductory text for architectural students and professionals.

This book sparked my interest not only because of my study of architecture in the Pasadena Gamble House and the Greene & Greene arts & craft epoch, but also when I saw & read the author’s name. Tom Houg’s genius lies in his succinct style of writing and makes it articulately clear to even the occasional reader. What may seem taboo or politically incorrect, he takes it off the table and describes sensitive situations without being offensive nor condescending. I feel like one of those lucky persons in life who got to meet the amiable author personally (not knowing who he was or even cared until his lips moved with words that penetrated my own thoughts and views). Tom is not just an artist; he is an author with an accolade for sharing more by speaking less. Buy the book! – rt
