About the Book
VOLUMES 2,3 & 4 (OMNIBUS EDITION) Very large landscape format 33cm x 28cm. 'A WORLD IN ONE BRANCH LINE' The George - Knysna Railway. Runs to a massive 426 pages.
This is probably the largest railway photographic album ever produced. It follows on from Volume 1 (available separately) which followed a geographical presentation covering three decades.
This OMNIBUS Edition of Volumes 2,3,4 , presented in chronological order, covers 1983 - 1994 # 2, 1994 - 1999 #3, 2000 - 2006 #4.
Please note there is no duplication with Volume1 whatsoever, which was produced separately due to the different presentation styles.
For the real enthusiast of this railway, the Author is proud to present
this huge collection of many of his favourite images, from the largest photographic collection of this Branch Line in the World.
The series title is an apt description of the 67 km long railway running from George to Knysna in the Southern Cape area of South Africa. It was one of the best known steam worked railways in the World and constantly attracted photographers, both local and from overseas.
For several decades the Class 24 2-8-4s dominated the scene and only in later years were they supplemented by the 19D 4-8-2s on scheduled trains. Nonetheless many other classes put in an appearance from time to time. Notwithstanding familiar locomotives, the attraction lay in the line's varied scenery. This railway had it all : the ocean, estuaries, rivers and lakes, pastoral farmland, pretty as a picture villages, forests and mountain backdrops. Not to mention one of the World's most famous railway bridges.Other picturesque bridges and tunnels abounded.
As varied as the scenery was, so too the weather : fickle in the extreme, great patience was required by photographers as they waited for the coastal fronts to clear. Over the years, the Author spent more time in the vicinity of this line than any other, notwithstanding that it was 1,200 km from his home. A substantial portion of the route cannot be accessed by vehicle and the Author has walked the entire length of these remote sections searching out unfamiliar locations. This, together with having been granted access to various private properties, permits the presentation of images taken from unfamiliar vantage points.
Realising that three more Volumes will be beyond the financial capacity of some readers, the Author has specially assembled the three Chronological Volumes (2,3,4) in a massive Omnibus book, which is thus available more economically than had he released them in 3 separate books. ( Note , the first Volume is completely "stand alone " in its own right due to its geographical presentation.)
This massive 426 page omnibus in a huge landscape format, is not designed for steam / railway enthusiasts alone. All those who love stunning landscapes in this most beautiful part of South Africa will find this book fascinating.
Without a doubt this is the most comprehensive photographic book ever produced on this great railway and one that the Author is proud to add to his "Blurb" catalogue, now running to ten titles. The Volume is produced to exacting standards , and is a full 426 pages, casebound with dustjacket . The Author recommends the proline cover and endpaper options.
Photography like this demands a large format and, whilst realising that print on demand books are unavoidably expensive, "go for it" . The Author does not add any royalty whatsoever to this or any of his books, which are available to the public at production cost.
