About the Book
“A Study In Self” is the first series from published photographer Elena Lozina. Her ongoing interest in psychology has led her to develop an exposé in which she compared the human’s outer, physical shell to the inner, mental core. Her nine subjects were asked to open up about their insecurities, fears, and mental crutches, and to embody them in front of the camera. This was a three-part excercise: first was shot the regular portrait - it represented the way the person shows themselves to the world on a daily basis; second was shot the demon portrait, or the embodyment of their respective fear, and finally, a more in depth explanation of the process and post-shoot reflections through video. Many of the subjects reported a very positive outlook after having put their darkest thoughts in front of the light. Some said they became more aware of the way social standards reflected on them. Some felt empowered with the knowledge of their fear being only in their head. Some decided to begin a battle against their demons. And, others refused.
