    About the Book

    Edit

America, in all of it's enigma, is the source of my inspiration and my anger and I wanted to understand in better. I decided to spend the entire year of 2009 in a state of travel and soak up the irony with my Rolleiflex camera. Cattle ranches in rural Wyoming, Katrina demolition in Louisiana, and a 3-month cross-country bicycle trip were some points of entry during this intimate exploration. The result is this book, an homage to a country I now know less than I did before.

    Shane Darwent
    Chattanooga, TN USA

Shane Darwent received a BFA with concentrations in printmaking and photography from Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. He went on to work with master printers, Harlan & Weaver, in New York City, followed by a two-year fellowship at the Penland School of Crafts in Western North Carolina. While in the Core Fellowship Program at Penland, Shane continued to explore printmaking but focused the bulk of his attention towards alternative process photography and sculpture. Upon completion of the fellowship, Shane spent the year of 2009 traveling and making photographs across the US in an attempt to gather iconic images and unique perspectives from a nation in flux. With this project, he has received two artist residencies from the Ucross Foundation and the Jentel Artist Residency Program, both in Wyoming, and a project grant from the Chattanooga based organization, CreateHere. Currently, Shane lives and works in Chattanooga, TN.
