Philadelphia's history is parallels American History. Yet, Philadelphia has come into its own during this country's recent urban renewal. The birthplace of American independence, Philadelphia's is America's city. At it's core, on the cobblestone street's of Old City beside Betsy Ross's House, a spirit of Colonial America still echoes.
Every school child in America can recognize the Liberty Bell: the symbol of America's freedom from tyranny and oppression. Strolling down the cobblestone streets in Old City can transport you right back to 1776. If you need more animation, just catch one of the reenactment shows at the Betsy Ross House in the middle of the city.
But modern Philadelphia - Philly - means so much more to its visitors and residents. Yes, the cheesesteak is the first thing most people associate with Philadelphia. It makes sense, it's the people's food. But restauranteurs, most notably Stephen Starr, have made Philadelphia a foodie's city. But Marc Vetri, Georges Perrier and Jose Garces have international reputations as well. And there are a dozen other chef's who deserve mention as well (just read Craig LeBan's dining revue's and you'll know where to go).
Now young professionals are returning to Philadelphia in droves because it's a place of character, charisma and opportunity. International business, the restaurants and great bars, a bevy of theaters, galleries and an endless schedule of festivals and holiday events- Philly is hip and affordable. Outside of the cool and classy Center City high-rise district, it's just a patchwork of neighborhoods with corner cafes, byobs and small shops.
In timeless, sophisticated black and white photographsthe this 11x13 inch hardcover book captures the essence of the popular Italian Market, South Philly's ethnic neighborhood, Center City's sophistication, centuries-old stone churches, world class restaurants, Chinatown's street markets, the collegiate air of Boathouse Row, Manayunk's cool scene, artsy and edgy Northern LIberties and most importantly, the people and faces of Philadelphia.
The book opens with atmospheric shots of Rittenhouse Square in the driving rain, reminiscent of Steichen's famed NYC prints and it will grab your attention as you flip through images of life in one of American's most historical and unique cities: Philadephia.
