    About the Book

    Edit

"We are all setting suns" is the second compilation of paintings by celebrated artist Jenny Morgan, coming not quite three years after the publication of the initial volume "New Territory." That book catalogued Morgan's artistic output in it's entirety, from the moment she stepped into the Denver market as a painter in 2003 through her transition to New York City in 2006, where she has continues to live and work. "We are all setting suns" picks up from there, presenting the artist's output in it's entirety since. The works are once again presented with her most recent to start the volume and moving in reverse. They are culled from Morgan's solo exhibitions both in New York City and Denver, from her prominent group exhibitions which today span the across the entire US, as well as one-off works from her studio never presented formally in an exhibition but serving the demand of her ever growing following. This volume includes her portraits of major public figures like Julian Assange, Jil Sander, Gwenyth Paltrow and Courtney Love as commissioned by prominent entities such as the New York Times Magazine, New York Magazine as well as noted patron and passionate art collector Wayne F. Yakes, who contributes his own thoughts on Morgan here.

In addition to extending the comprehensive documentation of Morgan's output as a painter, this volume includes additions that start to bring the artist's notoriety and career into greater focus. The increasingly prolific, gifted writer Nancy Hightower contributes the new essay "Invisible Selves: The Uncanny Portraits of Jenny Morgan," providing a thoughtful and up-to-the-minute consideration of the artist's work. The complete interviews with Morgan for her first video profile "Jenny Morgan - Self Portrait" from 2011 are presented for the first time, as well as select photographs taken by Morgan as source material for her paintings.

To those who know Jenny, who have followed or collected her work, there is a distinct awareness that what she is doing and has achieved is quite rare, and that it is only the beginning. As she continues to loosen the bonds of traditional realist painting, the evolution within her work has grown increasingly more vibrant and daring, resulting in a visual charge that carries tremendous gravity. Morgan's dedication to her own ideals, to painting, and to what she has long held as a meaningful and deep career as a contemporary artist have proven to be immense. Her art intertwines the personal with the universal, carrying an emotional impact that resonates amongst those who are open to it. That audience seems to be consistently expanding, reflected not only by those who acquire her works but by the sheer volume of admirers, bloggers, and publications that have also made Jenny one of their prime discoveries. Her first ten years have held so much promise and depth as to cause a constant and insurmountable anticipation for her future.
