The Book of Felix has a few purposes to its being published. First, education through humor and photography. If you've never met or do not know an African Grey, you will after reading this book.
Second, edification. To all the Congo and Timneh owners out there; you are NOT alone. Felix is a challenge, too! Finally, celebration. Our home has 9 parrots including our beloved Felix. Everyone is free to fly here. Everyone is loved, respected, and empathized with through their own interpretations of life as a parrot.
My first bird was at the age of 12. A little parakeet I named Charlie. Charlie lived in my bedroom. I always let Charlie out of his cage after school, much to the chagrin of my mother. Charlie pooped a lot on my curtains. I adored that bird. Thirty-eight years later, married and living in the perfect home, I now have 9 parrots. Every one is free to fly the house, investigate each other's cages and generally just be who they are when they are ready to be. I began writing Felix stories for a little humor and to help others understand what it's REALLY like to live with, care for, and handle an intelligent creature such as a parrot. Felix, being Felix, was the perfect choice out of our Flock. He thinks too much. He is slow to believe a word I say or a deed I do on his behalf, and his contrast with every bird in our home shows just how crazy they are, and how sane he is. Felix is a Rescue bird. He chose us, and now I choose to share him with you.
